Family Session Guide

Welcome to the Gilmore Studios Family!

Hi, friend! I'm beyond excited that you’ve booked your family session with me. I’ve been behind the lens for over 20 years, and I can honestly say I love what I do more every single day. From capturing moments with families like yours to working with clients across the country, my job has given me a front-row seat to some of life’s most beautiful memories.

Whether you’re celebrating a milestone or simply making the most of your time together, I’m thrilled to be the one to capture it. There’s something so special about documenting real, authentic connections, and I can’t wait to create those moments with you.

I’ve put together this guide to help you prepare for your session. I want you to feel comfortable, confident, and excited when you step in front of the camera. Of course, I’m always here if you have any questions along the way—whether it's about the session itself or anything else!

Let’s make some magic happen together. I’m so excited to work with you!

Hugs,

Jennifer

What's Next?

It can be overwhelming when planning a family session. Here is a break down of what needs to be done.

Location

What kind of setting do you want for your session?

Beach, park, nature preserve, urban or city streets, historic site, botanical garden, rural or open fields, pier or waterfront, woodland forest, or hillside/cliffs. Each offers a unique vibe and a beautiful backdrop for your family session!

What to wear

For what to wear, go for comfort and coordination. Choose outfits that make you feel confident and complement each other. Neutral tones, soft pastels, or earth tones are great options. Avoid loud patterns, as they can distract from the moments we’re capturing. Most importantly, wear what makes you feel your best!

End Result

These photos aren’t meant to stay on your screen, they deserve to be printed and cherished. Whether you choose to print them yourself or take advantage of our full-service options, turning your images into beautiful albums, wall art, etc. brings those memories to life. Let’s create something timeless that you’ll enjoy for years to come!

Ordering

Your images will be ready 4 weeks after your session. You have the flexibility to choose how you'd like to view and order your prints. You can browse and select from the comfort of your home using an online gallery, or if you prefer a more personal touch, we can walk through the process together over a Zoom call. Whatever you prefer, we’re here to make the process smooth, simple, and convenient!

What to Expect...

You’ve officially secured your spot, and you should have received your signed contract, invoice for your retainer and print credit, and this helpful guide (yay!). Let me know if you didn’t receive any of these or need the links again.

• 1 month before your session: I’ll reach out to confirm the location if we haven’t already locked it in. I’ll also check in on your wardrobe planning. I know clothing can feel stressful, but I’m here to help. Whether you’re shopping online, at your favorite boutique, or pulling from your closet, it’s great to start early. You can text or email me outfit ideas for feedback. Whatever works best for you, I’m here to make the process easy and stress-free.

• 1 week before your session: I’ll send a quick email to confirm the location, time, and answer any last-minute questions. We’re almost there!

• 1-2 days before your session: Expect a text from me to make sure everything is good to go. I’ll also confirm the location address and provide my personal cell, incase you need to reach me immediately.

The night before: Time to get organized! Lay out your outfits and everything you’ll need for the session. Double check the map to make sure you know the drive time with traffic. Plan to arrive 5-10 minutes early so you don’t feel rushed. Set an alarm on your phone to remind you when to get ready and when it’s time to leave.

Day of: Relax! If you’re getting your hair and makeup done, enjoy the process. Make sure to check the map, drink plenty of water, and eat something. You’re going to look great and have a fantastic time!

Timing

When is the best time to schedule my family session?

Beach

Early in the morning or later in the evening, just before sunset is the best. These times offer soft, golden light and fewer crowds (especially in the morning). Morning sessions tend to have a calm, peaceful vibe, while evening sessions can give you a warm, glowing backdrop. We also need to consider the tide on your session date and if it's high or low.

Park

Mornings and late afternoons are ideal for park sessions, as the lighting is softer and more flattering. Midday light can be harsh, causing unflattering shadows, so it’s best to avoid that time. However, if midday is the only option, the park is a great choice because we can use trees for some natural shade and even lighting.

OUtdoors

Mornings and late afternoons are ideal for park sessions, as the lighting is softer and more flattering. Midday light can be harsh, causing unflattering shadows, so it’s best to avoid that time. If we are doing a big open space with no trees we want to definitely avoid the middle of the day when the sun is the highest.

STUDIO

Studio sessions are flexible and can be scheduled at any time of day. I recommend picking a time when everyone in your family is at their best. If your baby is happiest at 7 am, we can go for that. If your kids are busy until 7 pm, we can do the session at 8 pm. It’s the most flexible option when it comes to timing.
