The Question That Comes Up Every Single Time
You’ve booked your senior session. You’re excited. And then… the panic sets in.
What do I wear?
It’s the most common question I get before any senior shoot, and honestly, it makes sense. Your outfit feels like a big decision. You want to look like yourself, but also your best self. You want something that photographs well, but doesn’t feel costumey or forced.
Here’s what I want you to know before we dive in: the answer is almost always simpler than you think.
If you’re planning your session day around Newport Beach, it can also be fun to turn it into a full experience. Here are a few great spots nearby to grab a meal after your session:

The Session That Said It All
I photographed a senior session in Newport Beach a while back that I still think about.
She showed up in a flowy white dress, barefoot, with natural hair and minimal accessories. Some may worry it is too simple – but it was PERFECT.
As we moved under the pier, the light wrapped around her and the texture of the dress caught just enough movement to make every frame feel soft and effortless. When we walked down toward the water and she stepped in just slightly… the reflections, the movement in the dress, the natural light. Everything clicked.
What made that session stand out wasn’t multiple outfit changes or bold styling. It was that everything felt like her. Comfortable, confident, and completely natural.
That’s always the goal.

What Actually Works for Beach Senior Photos
After photographing so many senior sessions along the Newport Beach coastline, here’s what I’ve found works beautifully every time.
Keep It Simple and Timeless
Neutral tones – white, cream, soft pastels, light denim – photograph so well at the beach. They reflect light naturally and keep the focus right where it should be: on you, not your outfit.
Busy patterns and bold logos tend to pull attention away from your face and can also date your photos faster than you’d expect. Clean, minimal looks always age better.
Choose Movement Over Structure
Flowy dresses, skirts, and relaxed silhouettes create natural motion, especially with the ocean breeze working in your favor. That movement adds life to your photos without needing complicated posing or props.
Stiff or structured outfits don’t always translate the same way on the beach. The environment is soft and organic, and your outfit works best when it matches that energy.
Think About Where You’re Shooting
At the beach, barefoot almost always looks more natural than heels or formal shoes in the sand. The goal is to feel like you actually belong in that environment – not like you got lost on the way to somewhere else.
When your outfit makes sense for the location, everything feels more cohesive. And cohesive reads as confident.

Bring One or Two Outfits – Not Five
I always recommend:
One casual or flowy look – a dress, a relaxed outfit, something you feel easy and comfortable in
One slightly elevated look – still natural, but a little more styled
That gives us variety without making the session feel rushed or stressful. More outfits don’t equal better photos. Two intentional choices are always more than enough.

A Few More Things I Always Tell My Clients
Beyond the outfits themselves, a little preparation goes a long way.
Try your outfit on in natural light beforehand.
What looks good indoors can feel different outside. Give yourself that chance to feel confident before your session even starts.
Comfort equals confidence.
If you’re constantly adjusting your outfit, it will show in your photos. Choose something you can move, sit, and walk in easily. Your photos will thank you.
Keep accessories minimal.
Simple jewelry works best. You want your expressions and personality to stand out – not compete with what you’re wearing.
Don’t overthink it.
The best photos come from feeling relaxed. Your outfit should support that feeling, not add pressure to it.
Trust the process.
From posing to movement to where the light hits best, I’ll guide you through everything. You don’t have to figure it out on your own.

Why This Actually Matters
Senior photos aren’t just about having nice pictures to post. They’re a marker of a real season in your life – one that goes by faster than anyone expects.
Years from now, you’re going to look back at these images. And what you’ll want to feel is that they looked like you. Not a trend from that year. Not a version of you that felt uncomfortable or unsure. You.
That’s why I care so much about this. A thoughtful outfit choice sets the tone for the whole session. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, everything else – the posing, the movement, the expressions – flows so much more naturally.
And that’s when the magic happens.
Many seniors and families choose to work with Gilmore Studios because the experience is designed to feel simple, guided, and genuinely enjoyable from start to finish.
