When Should You Schedule a Cake Smash Session I Scottsdale Photographer

You’ve got a first birthday coming up. You want the photos. You’re thinking about the cake, the theme, the decorations… and somewhere in the middle of all that planning, you realize you have no idea when to actually book the session.

It’s one of the most common questions I hear from parents, and honestly, it’s a great one to ask early.

Because timing really does make a difference, not just for the photos, but for how relaxed the whole experience feels for you and your baby.

At Gilmore Studios, cake smash sessions are designed to feel simple, relaxed, and fun for the whole family so you can focus on enjoying the milestone rather than stressing about the details.

What I’ve Seen Work (and Why It Matters)

Not long ago, I photographed a little girl whose parents scheduled her cake smash session about a month before her first birthday party. That timing ended up being just right for their family.

We started with simple milestone portraits of her sitting on the floor in a soft, neutral outfit. At this age, babies are usually sitting confidently and showing so much personality… it makes for some of the most genuine images from the whole session.

Then we brought mom in for a few portraits together. Parents sometimes hesitate to step into the frame, but those photos? They almost always become some of the most meaningful ones from the day.

Then came the cake.

She looked at it very seriously at first, like she was trying to figure out why everyone was watching her. After a few curious touches, she realized the frosting tasted pretty good. By the end, she had frosting on her hands, a little on her face, and a proud smile that said everything.

A few weeks later, her parents told me they displayed the photos at her birthday party, and guests loved seeing them.

That’s exactly why the timing works.

If you’re planning a celebration after the session, many families enjoy going out for a relaxed meal afterward. Some popular family-friendly spots around the Gilbert and East Valley area include:

Postino East – a favorite for relaxed patio dining and great shareable plates

The Henry – perfect for brunch, lunch, or celebrating with visiting family

When to Schedule Your Baby’s Cake Smash Session

From photographing many first birthday sessions here in Gilbert and the East Valley, I’ve found that three to four weeks before your baby turns one is the sweet spot.

Here’s why…

Babies Are at a Great Stage for Photos

At this age, most babies are sitting up confidently and starting to really show their personality. They’re curious, expressive, and interactive, which makes for natural, fun images without a lot of coaxing.

You Have Time to Use the Photos Before the Party

Scheduling ahead gives your gallery time to be edited and delivered before the big day. Many families use their cake smash photos for birthday displays, framed prints at the party, or even last-minute decorations. That only works if the photos are done before the chaos of party week sets in.

It Takes the Pressure Off

Birthday week is busy. Between party prep, family visiting, and everything else on your plate, adding a photo session to that week just adds stress. Having it done ahead of time means you get to enjoy the session instead of squeezing it in.

A Few Tips to Make the Timing Even Easier

Book Early, Like Two to Three Months Out

Most families reach out two to three months before the birthday so we have time to plan the theme, styling, and session date together. Popular dates fill up quickly, especially in spring and fall.

Think About How You Want to Use the Images

Before we meet, it helps to think about whether you’d like to use the photos for invitations, party decorations, or framed displays at the celebration. That can shape how we approach the session and what we prioritize.

If you’re looking for outfits for your baby’s milestone portraits or family photos, these shops are great places to find soft, neutral clothing that photographs beautifully:

Don’t Stress About Your Baby’s Reaction to the Cake

Some babies dive right in. Others approach it slowly and thoughtfully. Both are completely normal, and both create wonderful images. There’s no wrong way for your baby to experience their first cake smash… I’ll take care of the rest.

Why This All Matters More Than You Might Think

First birthday photos aren’t just about the cake. They’re about marking a whole year of growth, love, and all the tiny moments that led up to that day.

When the timing is right, the session feels relaxed. The images feel real. And when those photos are displayed at the party, your guests aren’t just seeing cute pictures… they’re seeing your child’s story, right there on the wall.

That’s what I love most about these sessions. Done well, they give your family something genuinely lasting.
