The Snuggliest Sessions Are the Ones Where Everyone Shows Up
There’s something really tender about watching big siblings tiptoe (or sometimes bounce) into a newborn session and wrap themselves around the newest little love in the family. One of my recent favorite sessions was with a couple welcoming their third daughter. Her two big sisters were completely smitten… snuggling alongside mom and dad, all tangled up in matching dresses and giggles. The baby was swaddled tight and calm in the middle of it all, just soaking up the warmth.
It was gentle, joyful chaos in the best way.
That’s the kind of energy I love bringing into newborn sessions here at Gilmore Studios. The goal isn’t just solo baby portraits (those are beautiful too). It’s about documenting how the whole family gathers around this brand-new little person… loving her, celebrating her, making space for her. Because that’s the part that’ll mean the most—now and years down the road.

If you’re making a morning of your session
I always love pointing families to a few nearby spots to grab a bite afterward. In Newport Beach, places like Haute Cakes Caffé (https://www.hautecakescaffe.com) and Zinc Café & Market (https://www.zinccafe.com) are perfect for something cozy and casual. For families wanting something a little more elevated, A Market by Marché Moderne (https://www.amarketrestaurant.com) is a favorite for a relaxed but special meal—especially when you’re already riding that “we survived newborn photos” high.
Let’s talk about why I’m a big believer in including everyone in those first newborn portraits… and how little touches like matching outfits or one-on-one snuggles can make your session feel even more meaningful.

Why Including the Whole Family Creates Stronger, More Meaningful Newborn Photos
I know how hectic life can feel after adding a new family member. You’re running on little sleep, figuring out a whole new dynamic, and most of your time is tethered to a floppy newborn head and a stack of burp cloths. So adding a full family photo session might not feel like it should be your top priority…
But here’s what I’ve seen over and over again: when newborn sessions include the whole family – parents, siblings, even quiet moments of mom and baby alone – the images tell a deeper story. Not just “here’s what she looked like,” but “here’s how loved and celebrated she was from the very beginning.”
This isn’t just about a pretty photo (although yes, we’ll take care of that too). It’s about connection. Newborn Gilbert AZ Photographer. Queen Creek Arizona Newborn Photography

How I Approach Newborn Sessions That Involve the Whole Family
Including the whole family in newborn photos can feel a little overwhelming at first… especially if you’ve got toddlers or siblings with short attention spans (very normal!). But don’t worry, I’ve got a system that keeps things relaxed, flexible, and genuinely fun.
- We start with the big picture… then work small
I always begin with full-family shots while everyone’s fresh and cuddly. If there’s a sweet moment happening naturally – like a big sister rubbing baby’s head or dad adjusting a blanket – I’m capturing that. Then we move into simpler setups with just mom and baby, dad and baby, and solo newborn portraits.
There’s no need to force anything. Kids can take breaks, we can try again, and I’ll gently guide everyone with a calm approach that never feels stiff or overly posed.
- Gentle wardrobe guidance makes a big difference
You don’t need to stress about Pinterest-perfect outfits! But a little coordination helps make the photos look extra polished. That family I mentioned earlier? The two older girls wore matching dresses, and their baby sister had a swaddle in the same tones. It pulled the whole session together visually without feeling matchy-matchy.

If you’re shopping for outfits ahead of time
I often recommend places like Rylee + Cru (https://ryleeandcru.com) or Quincy Mae (https://quincymae.com) for soft, timeless pieces for babies and little ones. For moms, stores like VICI (https://www.vicicollection.com) and ShopBirdie (https://shopbirdie.com) carry comfortable, flattering options that photograph beautifully without feeling too “done.” Neutral textures, flowy fabrics, and pieces you already feel good in always win.
If you ever feel unsure, I help all my clients choose outfits that work well on camera… and I always recommend soft, neutral colors for newborns. They grow fast – you want clothing that won’t distract from those tiny fingers and sleepy expressions.

- We think long-term with every image we take
Will your baby remember these photos? No. But one day, she’ll see them. And she’ll see just how loved she was by her family from day one.
That’s why I always make space for solo portraits with each parent. Not just the picture-perfect ones, but the quiet shots of a mom cradling her daughter while wiping away a tear… or a dad’s arms wrapping protectively around that impossibly tiny body. Those photos are deeply emotional for parents now, and powerful gifts for your child in the future.

Your Newborn Session Can Be the First Chapter in a Bigger Story
I get lots of questions about how to make these newborn sessions even more purposeful. One of my biggest recommendations, especially for growing families, is to choose the Watch Me Grow Collection. It includes your newborn session, a “sitter” session (when baby can sit up unassisted), and a 1st Birthday Cake Smash. We’ll document your baby’s first year in the most joyful and meaningful way… little milestones and big belly laughs included.
For photographers reading this and wondering how to create offerings like this in their own businesses, this kind of thoughtful session flow and long-term planning is something I teach inside Photographers Roadmap. It’s a resource designed to help photographers build sustainable, client-centered businesses with clear systems, intentional offerings, and pricing that supports both creativity and profitability.
