How to Plan for Your Senior Photography Session
Everything you need to know to feel confident, prepared, and excited for your session!
Senior photos are so much more than just pictures. They’re a celebration of who you are right now, at this incredible milestone. I want your session to feel relaxed, fun, and completely you. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know so you can show up ready to shine.
If your schedule is packed or you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, a mini senior session might be the perfect fit! Mini sessions are a condensed version of the full experience, typically either 15 or 30 minutes, with a curated selection of images from one location and one outfit.
Mini sessions are a great option if you:
Need photos quickly before a yearbook deadline
Want a few beautiful images without a full session commitment
Already know exactly what you want and have a simple vision in mind
Are looking for a more affordable way to celebrate this milestone
While you won’t have the same variety as a full session, you’ll still walk away with stunning images that capture this season of your life. Mini sessions fill up fast, so if this sounds like the right fit, reach out sooner rather than later!

Get in touchTiming – Full Session
A full sessions typically last 1+ hour, and I recommend booking at least 4–6 weeks in advance, especially during peak months. Once you reach out, we’ll find a date that works for both of us and chat through your vision before the big day.
A few things to keep in mind when picking your date:
• Golden hour (about an hour before sunset) gives the most flattering, dreamy light
• Weekday sessions are often more flexible and easier to book (and less crowds on the beach)
• Give yourself a buffer before any yearbook submission deadlines. Editing and delivery take a couple weeks
Location Tips
Where we shoot sets the whole mood for your gallery, so this is one of the most fun decisions to make! I love helping seniors find spots that feel meaningful and true to their personality.
Some popular options to consider:
• Urban settings — brick walls, murals, downtown streets, and architectural details make for bold, modern images
• Natural backdrops — fields, back bay, beach, and parks create a timeless, soft feel
• Meaningful spots — your high school campus, a favorite local hangout, or anywhere that tells your story
• Studio sessions — a clean, classic option that keeps the focus entirely on you
We can also mix locations within a single session! If you have a few different vibes in mind, let’s talk through what’s possible with your package.

What to Wear
Outfit choices can feel overwhelming, but here’s the good news: there’s no wrong answer as long as it feels like you. I recommend bringing 2–3 outfits so we can create variety throughout your gallery.
A few tips that make a big difference:
• Choose clothes that fit well and feel comfortable. Confidence shows in photos
• Avoid large logos or busy patterns that can distract from your face
• Solid colors and simple textures tend to photograph beautifully
• Think about your location when choosing. Flowy dresses love open fields and beaches; structured looks feel great in urban settings
• Layer it up! A jacket, cardigan, or hat can add variety without a full outfit change
Don’t forget the details: make sure hems are pressed, there are no visible tags, and your shoes are in good shape. Little things matter more on camera than you’d expect!
If you’re planning to bring a cap and gown, a sport uniform, or any other meaningful props, absolutely bring them along.
Hair & Makeup
You should look like the best version of yourself…not overdone, not underdone. Whatever your normal routine looks like, just bring a little more intentionality to it on session day.

A few guidelines:
Hair: Freshly washed and styled is ideal. If you’re doing anything new (a trim, a color treatment), do it about a week before the session so it has time to settle.
Makeup: Go slightly bolder than your everyday look. The camera lenses tend to soften features, so a little extra definition helps
Skin: Stay hydrated in the days leading up to your session, and avoid trying new skincare products right beforehand.
Nails: Your hands will be in plenty of shots, so a fresh manicure never hurts!
If you’re thinking about hiring a hair and makeup artist, I’m happy to share a few names I love working with.

What to Bring
Pack a small bag the night before so you’re not scrambling the day of.
Here’s a handy list:
• All of your outfits, shoes, and accessories
• A small touch-up kit: lip gloss, powder, a brush or comb, bobby pins, and any products you use
• Water bottle if you get thirsty
• Any meaningful props: sports gear, instruments, a favorite book, a pet you love, your college flag, sweatshirt or hat
• A good attitude and your excitement – that’s truly the most important thing!
Posing & What to Expect
If the idea of being in front of the camera makes you a little nervous, that is completely normal, and I promise you’ll forget about it within the first few minutes. My job is to guide you through every single pose so you never have to wonder what to do with your hands.
Here’s what a typical session looks like:
We’ll start somewhere you feel comfortable and ease into it. I’ll give you direction throughout; where to look, how to angle your body, when to laugh and we’ll mix in some movement to keep things feeling natural. Some of my favorite images come from the in-between moments, not the perfectly posed ones.
A few things that help:
• Trust the process: even if something feels awkward, it often looks amazing
• Tell me if you have a side you prefer or a pose you’ve seen and loved
• We’ll move through a mix of standing, sitting, and candid shots to give your gallery variety
• Bring a playlist if music helps you feel relaxed and in your element
By the end, most seniors tell me they actually had so much fun. That’s always my goal!
What to Do With Your Images

Once your gallery is delivered, the fun really begins!
Here are some of the most popular ways seniors use their photos:
1. Announcement cards: Share your milestone with family and friends in a beautiful, tangible way.
2. Yearbook submission: Check your school’s deadline and required dimensions ahead of time.
3. Social media: Your session, your story, your moment to share.
4. Wall art & prints: Large canvas or framed prints make incredible gifts for parents and grandparents.
5. Holiday cards: A senior photo card is a wonderful way to end the year right.
6. Album or Press Book: A curated album of your session is something you’ll treasure for decades.
I offer print products and album design through my studio, so if you’d love help turning your favorites into something tangible, just ask!

Frequently Asked Questions
Gilbert and the surrounding East Valley offer a great variety of locations, from the urban textures of downtown Gilbert and the Heritage District to open fields, desert landscapes, and parks in Chandler and Mesa. Location is chosen based on your senior’s personality and the vibe they want for their photos.
For fall senior sessions (the most popular time for school portraits and holiday gifts), book by August. January sessions are ideal for seniors who want the most flexibility in scheduling. Avoid waiting until the last minute, senior season books out fast across the Gilbert, Chandler, and Mesa area.
Most senior sessions include two to three outfit changes. This gives variety in the final gallery and lets your senior show different sides of their personality; dressy, casual, and then something to do with what they are planning to do after high school (college, tradeschool, etc). We want it to feel most like them.
Look for a photographer who makes your senior feel relaxed and natural in front of the camera, not stiff and posed. Experience matters, but so does the ability to connect with teenagers quickly. Review full galleries (not just highlight reels) to make sure the style feels authentic to you.
Absolutely. Senior sessions are about celebrating a milestone, not a specific school calendar. Whether your student graduates in May, December, or is homeschooled, Gilmore Studios welcomes sessions year-round.
