Why I Believe Every Birthday Deserves a Photo Session (Not Just the First One)
There’s something pretty magical about a birthday… especially when it’s your child’s. That feeling doesn’t just exist on their first birthday with a cake smash or a “Pinterest-worthy” theme. Year after year, our kids grow, change, show us new quirks and personalities—and these milestones deserve to be celebrated too.
I’ve worked with one sweet family over several years, capturing their daughter’s birthday shoots. This year was her big five… no cake necessary. She’s all about flowers these days, so we brought that theme into the studio with a custom floral background. They even brought their dog (yes, pets are always welcome around here) and joined in for some updated family photos. A simple way to honor a new year of her life and get the kind of images that last longer than balloons or party favors ever will.
If you’re wondering if it’s “too much” to do annual birthday portraits… I’m here to tell you it doesn’t have to be a whole production. It can actually be fun, relaxed, and really meaningful.

The Real Reason I Recommend Birthday Sessions Beyond the First
Here’s the thing: the first birthday gets all the attention. I totally get it. Firsts are important. But here’s what I’ve learned after many years behind the camera—every age deserves celebrating.
Your child doesn’t stop growing after one. In fact, five, seven, ten… those ages are full of stories too. They reflect who your child really is, what they’re into, the sweet in-between season before their next big phase. And if you make birthday sessions a tradition, you end up with a beautiful visual timeline of your child’s life—and your family right alongside them.
With the right photographer (hi… that’s me), it doesn’t have to add any stress to your already full life.
Let’s break down how to make yearly birthday sessions simple and joyful.

How to Make Birthday Photo Sessions Feel Fun (and Not Overwhelming)
1. Pick a Theme That Fits Your Child Right Now
No need to go over the top. Start by thinking about what your child loves at this age. For our 5-year-old birthday girl, it was flowers. So we used florals as the backdrop and built everything from there.
Try these ideas:
- A favorite animal or color
- A hobby or obsession (hello, dinosaurs or fairies)
- A simple, clean look that keeps the focus on their smile
You don’t need tons of props. Just something simple to set the mood and let their personality shine.
2. Include the Whole Family (Or Don’t—Totally Up to You)
This part is flexible. Sometimes it’s just about the birthday girl or boy. Other times, it’s a perfect excuse to update your family portraits too. Some of my favorite sessions start with just the child… then the family jumps in for a few.
And yes—dogs count as family. Bring them.
3. Start with the Smiles, Then Let’s Play
Here’s my tried-and-true method: we knock out the “posed” shots first. That way we’ve got a few beautiful, frame-worthy images right away. Then… we let your kid sparkle.
That means movement, laughter, silly faces, dancing with a sibling or cuddles with mom. This is where we get the best photographs—the ones that feel like them. And if they decide to strike a random pose they saw on YouTube? I’m here for it.
4. Make It a Low-Stress Tradition
If you know every year this is your “thing,” it takes a lot of decision fatigue out of it. We brainstorm once a year, set a date that works around your normal routine (yes, I know weeknights and practices are real), and I help you with a style guide or suggestions ahead of time.
You don’t have to pull off a party-level plan for this. Just show up… I’ll take care of the rest.

These Sessions Matter More Than You Think
It’s easy to forget to stop and celebrate the little layers of childhood. But when you make space for it—just one afternoon, once a year—you get more than just a photo. You get a piece of your child’s story that you’ll be so thankful to look back on.
And for moms especially… these sessions aren’t about perfection. They’re about being present. That’s what your kid will remember.
So whether it’s a themed birthday session in my Arizona photo studio, a sunny family photo shoot in Orange County, or a spontaneous milestone moment—you don’t need a big reason to step in front of the lens. Just a little love and a willingness to hit pause for a bit.

Keep It Simple with the Setup
What you see online can be a lot… but your baby doesn’t need a stage-sized backdrop or 37 props. I always recommend choosing a handful of meaningful elements that “fit” your baby’s vibe.
For our winter-wonderland session, we kept the color palette tight (think soft blushes and silvers), added a snowy backdrop with sparkly tree décor, and let the cake do the heavy lifting.
Less clutter means more focus on your little one and allows their personality to shine.

Where to Eat After the Session
Make the day even more memorable by turning the photoshoot into a birthday outing. Three great Orange County kid-friendly spots include:
• The Pie Hole for a sweet treat
• Ruby’s Diner at the Huntington Beach Pier for a fun oceanfront lunch
• Bluewater Grill for family-friendly seafood nearby
Each one is close to the studio and perfect for celebrating your little Elsa.

Why This Session Is an Investment in Memories
These portraits become more than birthday pictures. They become the images that:
- Fill your home
- Mark your child’s growth
- Capture their personality
- Tell the story of the age they loved Frozen
At Gilmore Studios, we create portraits that last long after the cake is gone and the party is over.
