Crystal Cove Family Portrait Session | Gilmore Studios

It Never Goes Perfectly. That’s Kind of the Whole Point.

You spend weeks coordinating outfits, prepping the kids, mentally rehearsing how you want everyone to look…

And then you show up, and real life happens.

Someone’s grumpy. Someone won’t stop squinting. Dad looks like he’s waiting for a bus.

Here’s what I want you to know: that’s not a problem. That’s actually where the good stuff starts.

I had a session at Crystal Cove not too long ago that I keep coming back to. Not because it was flawless, but because of what happened when it stopped trying to be.

The Turning Point Most Families Don’t Expect During a Family Photo Session

We started the way I always do – everyone together, close, looking at the camera. That classic shot you know you want. We got it.

And then things shifted.

Dad pulled the boys in close, and suddenly it turned into this real, slightly chaotic, genuinely them moment. Arms wrapped around each other. Kids leaning in. Everyone laughing just a little bit.

No one was thinking about the camera anymore.

That’s always the turning point.

We moved into smaller groupings after that – just the kids together – and their personalities came out instantly. The oldest stepped naturally into that “leader” role. The younger ones leaned in. Their whole dynamic told the story without me having to direct much at all.

Those are the images families end up loving the most. The ones that feel like them, not just a posed version of them.

What Makes a Crystal Cove Family Session Feel Natural and Effortless?

What Actually Makes a Session Feel This Way
If you’ve ever wondered what makes a family session feel effortless, it comes down to a few things I’ve learned over the years.

Start structured, then let it loosen up
We always begin with a more traditional portrait – everyone together, looking at the camera. That gives you the image you know you want on the wall.

But after that, I intentionally shift into a more relaxed flow where connection matters more than perfection. That structure at the start actually makes the loosening up feel easier for everyone.

Let kids be kids
This is a big one.

The best photos don’t happen when kids are told to stand still and smile. They happen when they’re interacting with each other, leaning in, laughing, even being a little silly.

I guide just enough to keep things moving. But I never force moments. Forced moments look exactly like what they are.

The location does a lot of the work
Crystal Cove is one of my favorite places for a reason. The soft coastal light, the neutral landscape tones, the open space… it all works together to create a calm, timeless look that doesn’t compete with your family. It highlights you.

When the setting is doing its job, you don’t have to do as much.

Connection over perfection, every time
Perfectly posed hands and perfectly straight posture don’t matter nearly as much as how you’re actually interacting with each other.

The goal is always to capture how your family feels in this season of life. That’s what you’ll want to look back on.

Tips for Planning a Crystal Cove Family Photography Session

A Few Practical Tips If You’re Planning a Crystal Cove Session
These are the things I always share with my clients ahead of time, because a little prep goes a long way.

Coordinate, don’t match. Think soft neutrals, warm tones, subtle textures. Your outfits should work together like a palette, not a uniform.

Layers photograph beautifully. Light jackets and textures add dimension without being distracting… and they’re practical for coastal weather.

Timing is everything. We typically shoot close to sunset for that soft, glowing light. It’s worth building your day around it.

Keep it simple with the kids. Instead of “be good” or “smile for the camera,” try telling them you’re going for a walk together and maybe playing a little. That shift in framing completely changes their energy.

Trust the in-between moments. Some of the most meaningful images come from the quick hugs, the laughter, the way your kids naturally lean into you. Those aren’t accidents. Those are the session.

Don’t forget we need to get a permit for this location.

Why Candid Family Photos Matter More Than Perfect Poses?

Why This All Actually Matters
Years from now, you’re not going to look at these photos and think, “I wish we had stood up straighter.”

You’re going to look at the way your kids leaned into each other. The way your family looked in this season. The real version of you, not the perfectly curated one.

That’s what a session like this is for.

And honestly? Getting there isn’t as complicated as it feels before you arrive. Most families are surprised by how quickly things loosen up once we get going. You don’t have to be photogenic. You just have to show up.

I’ll take care of the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Newport Beach family photographer cost?

Family photography sessions in Newport Beach typically range from $900 to $2,500+ depending on session length, number of edited images, products, and whether digital files or prints are included. At Gilmore Studios, sessions are priced to reflect an amazing experience with fully edited images delivered in an online gallery. Contact us for current pricing and availability.

What is the best time of day for family photos at Newport Beach?

The golden hour, roughly 60 to 90 minutes before sunset, is ideal for Newport Beach beach sessions. The light is soft, warm, and flattering, and the beach is typically less crowded than midday. In summer, that falls around 6:30–7:30pm. In fall and winter, plan for closer to 4:30–5:30pm. If you are having a studio session, anytime of day is great.

What should we wear for Newport Beach family photos?

Soft, coordinated tones work beautifully against the sand and ocean. Think creams, whites, light blues, and warm neutrals. Avoid busy patterns or matching outfits that are too identical; the goal is a cohesive look, not a uniform. Layers like linen shirts, light cardigans, and flowy dresses photograph especially well in the coastal breeze.

How far in advance should I book a Newport Beach family session?

For fall sessions (September through November, the most popular season), booking 6–8 weeks in advance is recommended. Spring and summer sessions can sometimes be arranged with 2–3 weeks notice. Holiday card sessions in October and November book out the fastest.

Can you include young children and toddlers in a beach family session?

Absolutely, and honestly, beaches like Little Corona, Balboa, and Crystal Cove are some of the best locations for young kids specifically. There’s built-in entertainment (tide pools, sand, waves) that keeps little ones naturally engaged and happy, which means more authentic expressions and less convincing them to smile.

Which Newport Beach beach location is best for family photos?

It depends on your family’s vibe. Little Corona del Mar is great for families with young children thanks to calm water and tide pools. Balboa Beach is energetic and fun with the ferris wheel as a backdrop. Crystal Cove offers more dramatic scenery and is ideal for families who want a less crowded, more timeless feel. The Newport Pier is perfect if you want a mix of beach and landmark in one session. Plus we aren’t worrying about the tide rolling in because the beach is so deep.

Do you travel for family sessions outside of Newport Beach?

Yes. Gilmore Studios photographs family sessions throughout Orange County, including Corona del Mar, Laguna Beach, and Huntington Beach, as well as Gilbert and the East Valley in Arizona. Destination sessions and travel are also available upon request.

Do you have a personality portrait hanging in your home? 🤍

It’s not about perfect smiles or matching outfits.

It’s about capturing who your child actually IS right now.

Their expressions.
The way they laugh.
Their personality in this exact season of life.

I started doing these with my own kids and honestly… they’ve become some of my favorite things hanging in our home.

I update them yearly and one day, my plan is to have their future family personality photo hanging on the wall.

These aren’t just photos for now.

They become part of your family story.

Personality Portrait Sessions are available May 12th through June.
