Family Photography at Crystal Cove State Park | Gilmore Studios

What makes Crystal Cove State Park a great location for natural family photos?

The sun was just starting to drop. That soft, golden light was hitting the wooden boardwalk in the most beautiful way, and we were maybe a few minutes into the session when everything shifted.

The two sisters were walking ahead of their parents, holding hands, chatting with each other, and they completely forgot I was there. That’s when some of the best images happened.

That’s honestly what I’m always working toward. Not just photos that look good, but images that actually feel like your family.

Crystal Cove State Park has a way of making that happen, almost naturally. And if you’ve been thinking about a family session there, let me share exactly why I recommend it so often.

Many of these sessions are photographed through Gilmore Studios, where the focus is always on creating a relaxed, guided experience so your family can enjoy the moment without feeling staged

What Makes Crystal Cove So Special for Family Photos

A lot of locations look beautiful in someone else’s photos and then feel awkward when you actually show up. Crystal Cove is different.

There’s a reason it keeps showing up on my list of go-to spots and it really comes down to three things.

The light is consistently flattering

Evening light at Crystal Cove wraps around your family in a way that feels soft and natural. No harsh shadows, no squinting into the sun. Just warm, even light that does a lot of the work on its own.

The hour before sunset is when this location really comes to life. Everything feels more relaxed, the colors deepen, and your family looks like themselves rather than like people trying to take a photo.

The color palette works for you

The warm grasses, neutral wood tones, and soft ocean backdrop create a setting where your family naturally stands out. Nothing feels distracting or competing for attention.

In the session I mentioned above, the mix of soft pastels and neutrals the family wore worked perfectly with the surroundings. The environment did a lot of the heavy lifting.

It encourages real interaction

This is probably the biggest one. Crystal Cove isn’t a stand-and-smile kind of location. The paths, the boardwalk, the open space that naturally invites movement and connection.

Instead of holding a pose, we’re walking, exploring, and letting things unfold. That’s where the real moments live.

If you’re planning to make a full outing out of your session, many families love heading to a nearby restaurant before or after. A few favorites near Crystal Cove include:

The Beachcomber Cafe – Right on the sand at Crystal Cove, perfect for a relaxed coastal meal with an incredible view.

Crystal Cove Shake Shack – Casual, family friendly, and great for something quick with ocean views.

A Few Things I Always Tell My Clients Before a Crystal Cove Session

If you’re planning a session here, these are the things I share with every family ahead of time.

Plan around golden hour

The hour before sunset is the window at this location. The light becomes warm and directional, the energy feels more relaxed, and everything just photographs better. It’s worth planning your schedule around it.

Choose outfits that complement the environment

Soft blues, creams, light pinks, and earthy tones all photograph beautifully here. You don’t need to match perfectly, but keeping the palette soft and cohesive helps everything feel connected.

When everyone feels comfortable in what they’re wearing, it shows. That confidence comes through in the photos.

Focus on connection, not perfection

Your kids don’t need to stand still or smile on command. Some of the most meaningful images from any session come from small, unscripted moments, holding hands, leaning into each other, laughing at something unexpected.

In that session I mentioned, the two sisters sat together on the edge of the boardwalk and leaned into each other without being asked. It was simple. And it said everything.

Why This All Matters

I think a lot of families put off booking a session because they’re worried it won’t feel natural. That the kids won’t cooperate, that they won’t know what to do with their hands, that it’ll feel forced.

Crystal Cove has a way of quietly solving most of those concerns. The environment is relaxed, the light is forgiving, and when we add some gentle movement and interaction into the mix, things start to feel real pretty quickly.

That family walking down the boardwalk together? They weren’t performing. They were just being together. And those are the images they’ll want on their walls.

Simple Sophistication

Photography started as something I loved.

I never picked up a camera thinking it would become a business, support my family, introduce me to thousands of incredible people, or still be part of my life 20+ years later.

But somewhere along the way, a hobby became a career.

Then a business.

Then a huge part of my life. 🤍

I’ve photographed weddings, newborns, seniors, families, birthdays, and milestones for people I’ve known for decades.

And honestly?

The greatest part isn’t the photos.

It’s the people.

The families who come back year after year.
The babies who become seniors.
The clients who become friends.

That’s what keeps me showing up every day.

Do you have a hobby you secretly wish could become your full-time job?

Comment LEARN if you’d like to see how I turned photography into a 20+ year business.
You trusted a photographer with 3000+ followers… instead of 300k 👀

And honestly? Best decision ever. 🤍

Because great photos aren’t about follower count.

They’re about connection, experience, and capturing your child in a way that actually feels like THEM.

The laughing.
The personality.
The little in-between moments parents never want to forget. 🥹

That’s the stuff that matters years later ✨
Personality Portraits booking now….Most of my clients have no idea what the final image is going to look like when I’m taking it.

I’m asking siblings to stand here.
Look there.
Move closer.
Laugh at each other.

And sometimes it probably makes absolutely no sense in the moment.

But that’s the beauty of trusting the process.

Because what I’m really looking for isn’t perfect smiles.

It’s connection.

The way siblings look at each other.
The little laughs.
The personalities that make your family yours.

Those are the photos that end up meaning the most years later.

If you love photos that capture your child's personality, comment PERSONALITY and I'll send you all the details about our Personality Portrait Sessions 🤍
