Huntington Beach family photography – Downtown HB

Downtown Huntington Beach is one of our favorite family portrait locations in OC. Complete with shops, restaurants, and amazing people watching, we always get a great portrait session here. There are a ton of options for Huntington Beach family photography locations- which is the main reason we love this place! Be sure to bring a a couple easy outfit options- a jacket, sweater, or some type of layer. Since it does get pretty chilly by the beach, you’ll be glad you did.

Let’s get started!

A typical family session starts in the downtown area, off of the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Main st. Next we will take your family to find some cool vintage backgrounds (bricks, old painted doors, etc.) These are mostly in the alleys behind Main Street. Depending on your outfits and color scheme, we will scout out some colorful backgrounds as well. Most families request the beach but we always start in the urban areas, out of the wind so moms hair looks perfect! After the safe shots are done, we will walk across PCH to the Huntington Beach Pier!

Family Portraits on the Sand

The Huntington Beach pier is huge! Even on a crowded day, we can always find spot for your family session. Comparing it to the Newport pier, sometimes you have to wait for a few other photographers there. We like to start out under the pier and let the sun go down a little. We will photograph all the combos there, siblings, kids with mom, kids with dad, etc. Next we will walk down to the water and get a few beautiful photos with the sun bursting through the pier in the background! Holding hands by the surf, running, walking, jumping- whatever you guys are in the mood for! If your kids have a sweet tooth, there are plenty of places to get a treat after the session is over.

Simple Sophistication

We are on Instagram
This year’s mini sessions are in the studio on our clean white backdrop. It’s timeless, classic, and the perfect blank canvas to let your family’s personality shine.

Last year we photographed this family, and they brought so much fun energy into their session. Proof that even on a simple backdrop, your joy and connection make the photos unique.

If you’ve been waiting for updated portraits, this is the easiest (and most fun!) way to do it
When it’s 115° by midday, sunrise is your best friend. For this session, we met at sunrise to photograph an 18-year-old heading out on his LDS mission.
	•	The light is softer and golden…perfect for portraits.
	•	The heat hasn’t set in yet, so you’re more comfortable.
	•	And bonus: fewer crowds at popular locations.

If you’re planning a summer session in Arizona, sunrise is the way to go!
When planning twin sessions, I recommend choosing a theme that works for both. Simple and timeless designs photograph beautifully. For these brothers, we created a custom backdrop with balloons and large ONE letters so they could share the stage but still have space to shine individually.

Tip: Jeans or coordinated outfits help tie the look together without making it too matchy matchy.

Planning a twin birthday Let’s make it memorable
We photographed this sweet newborn in December, and it’s a question I get all the time: When should we book our newborn session?
	•	The ideal window is within the first few weeks so your baby is extra sleepy and curled up.
	•	But don’t stress if you miss that. Sessions can be beautiful at any stage.
	•	I’ll guide you through family photos, sibling shots (if needed), and solo portraits so every detail of this season is remembered.
This baptism session was extra special because we have known the family awhile. The baptism took place in a beautiful church on Balboa Island.
	•	The sacred space adds so much meaning to the portraits.
	•	Including details like the font, stained glass, and family prayer moments makes the photos timeless.
	•	And of course, we always capture family groupings because this day is about legacy as much as it is about your little one.
