Let’s be real: when you’re balancing kids, work, appointments, and growing an actual human, the thought of planning a maternity photoshoot might feel… like a lot. You might even wonder, “Should I bother getting the whole family involved?”
Here’s my take: yes… if you can, absolutely yes.
Including your partner and kids in your maternity session adds a layer of meaning that solo photos just can’t capture. It doesn’t have to be extra work, and no one needs to be in every single frame. But a few thoughtful images that reflect this moment in your family’s story? That’s something truly special.
I recently photographed a maternity session at the beach where their young son basically stole the show. He was so excited about welcoming his new sibling, and we let him take the lead on some photos. His joy was contagious, the colors complimented the surroundings, and we mixed posed shots with fun, candid ones under the trees. It all flowed so naturally… and that’s the magic that happens when family gets involved.

If you’re planning to make a day of your maternity session, I always love sharing a few favorite spots nearby for a relaxed meal afterward. In Newport Beach, families often enjoy something casual and comfortable like Haute Cakes Caffé (https://www.hautecakescaffe.com) or Zinc Café & Market (https://www.zinccafe.com). For Arizona sessions, The Porch (https://www.theporchrestaurants.com) and Snooze, an A.M. Eatery (https://www.snoozeeatery.com) are great options for easy, sit-down meals that feel like a small celebration before heading home.

This Is the Last Time Your Family Will Look Like This
One of the things I remind clients all the time is this: maternity photos are about the baby, but they’re also about your family as it exists right now. It’s the in-between… the chapter before everything changes.
For many families I photograph around Newport Beach or in Gilbert, AZ, it’s the last time it’ll just be the three of you. Or the four of you. Or however your crew looks right now. And that deserves to be remembered.
I love, love when partners and kids join in. Over the years, I’ve learned that when families show up together, we can create something deeper than just “baby bump” photos. We’re creating storylines your children will grow up flipping through… and that’s powerful.

Easy Ways to Include Family in Your Maternity Session
If you’re on the fence about involving your partner or kids, know this: they don’t need to be in every shot. I promise the session will still feel like you, and I always make sure to guide the energy smoothly so you’re not juggling chaos through every frame.
Here are a few ideas I suggest often…

Let Siblings Take the Lead Sometimes
Kids actually bring so much warmth when they lead a few fun moments. Think hand-on-belly shots, whispering their baby sibling’s name, or giggling into mom’s belly. I’ll guide where needed… but often, their personalities shine best with a little freedom to play.
Bonus? Giving them a “job” often helps them feel included and excited, which avoids those “do I have to?” faces.

Include Just a Few, Meaningful Photos with Your Partner
Even one or two sweet couple shots shifts the tone of your gallery. Whether it’s a forehead-to-forehead moment, a wrapped hug, or just a walk along the sand, they freeze your connection in time… which, again, is about to look really different soon.
Your partner doesn’t have to love being photographed. That’s my job – to ease them in, keep it chill, and get great images fast.

Mix Candid and Posed Moments
The best maternity galleries include a little of both. We’ll do some lightly posed images (where I’ll guide your hands, posture, spacing)… and then I leave space for tickles, laughter, shoulder rides, or beach races. Kids naturally bring movement. I bring expertise. Together, we make images you’ll actually want to frame.

Keep It Short and Sweet (Especially with Littles)
We don’t need hours. Most family-inclusive maternity sessions are 45-60 minutes tops. I recommend choosing a time of day when your kids are happiest (usually morning or early evening), and I’ll take care of the pacing from there. Sessions go fast when everyone’s having fun.

The Big Picture: This Is Part of Your Family Legacy
When your kids see these photos years from now… when you’re holding their tiny hands or they’re running next to you at the beach… they’ll feel how loved they were, even before they arrived.
And when you look back? You’ll see how beautiful, strong, and connected you were in this in-between season.
So yes, say yes to including the whole family – even in just a few frames.

When it comes to what to wear, I always encourage comfortable, movement-friendly pieces that photograph beautifully without feeling overdone. For moms, stores like VICI (https://www.vicicollection.com) and ShopBirdie (https://shopbirdie.com) offer flattering, flowy styles that work well for maternity sessions. For kids, brands like Rylee + Cru (https://ryleeandcru.com) and Quincy Mae (https://quincymae.com) are favorites for soft fabrics and neutral tones that keep the focus on connection, not outfits.
And if you’re still not sure what that could look like, I’d love to help you plan a session that feels natural, joyful, and totally doable. Whether it’s in Orange County, by the water in Newport Beach, or here in the Arizona desert… you don’t need to stress about making it perfect.
You just need to show up.
I’ll take care of the rest.
