There’s Something Different About These Sessions
Most people come to a photo session hoping to look good.
Missionary sessions are different.
You’re not just marking a milestone… you’re stepping into one of the biggest moments of your life. And the photos from this season? They’re going to matter in ways that are hard to fully understand right now.
I’ve had the privilege of photographing a lot of these sessions here in Arizona, and every single time, I leave feeling like I witnessed something really significant. Not because of the light (though Arizona light is stunning). Not because of the outfits or the locations.
It’s because of what the whole thing means.
If you’re planning your session day, many families turn it into something special—whether that’s a quiet dinner together before the session or a small gathering after. Here are a few great restaurant options in the East Valley:

These Sessions Deserve More Than “Just Wing It”
I get it. You’ve got a mission call, a departure date, a long list of things to prepare, and somewhere in the middle of all of that, someone says “you should probably get photos done.”
So you book a session… and then maybe panic a little about what to wear, where to go, and whether you’ll look awkward the whole time.
Here’s what I want you to know: the awkward feeling almost always goes away. Especially when the session is approached with intention rather than pressure.
One of my favorite missionary sessions started right outside the temple gates just before sunset. The light was coming through the palm trees, everything felt calm, and this young woman showed up with a few simple, meaningful things: her scriptures, her mission call, a dress that felt like her.
Nothing overdone. Just thoughtful.
By the end, it didn’t feel like a photoshoot anymore. It felt like we were documenting something that actually mattered. Because we were.

What Makes a Missionary Session Truly Special
1. Keep It Simple and Intentional
The focus should always be on you and the significance of what you’re about to do.
Clean, modest outfits in soft or neutral tones photograph beautifully and keep everything timeless. You don’t need to overthink this part… simple almost always wins.

2. Choose Locations That Mean Something
Temple grounds (my favorite), desert gardens, and natural Arizona landscapes all work really well for these sessions.
They offer a peaceful, symbolic backdrop that feels fitting for this kind of moment without pulling attention away from you. The desert has this quiet, meaningful quality to it… especially in the evening light.
3. Bring Personal Elements
A few intentional items can add so much depth to your session.
Your scriptures
Your mission call
The flag of where you will be serving
These aren’t props. They’re part of your story… and they show up in the images in a way that feels real, not staged.
4. Trust the Quiet Moments
Some of the most meaningful images from missionary sessions aren’t posed at all.
A soft smile. Looking toward the light. Holding something that matters to you. Pausing near the temple gates and just… reflecting.
I always make space for those in-between moments because that’s often where the real feeling lives.
5. Plan Around the Light
Arizona gives us genuinely beautiful light, especially in the evening. That soft, golden tone adds a peaceful and elevated feel that fits these sessions perfectly.
If you have flexibility with timing, sunset is almost always the right call. If it’s summer – its SO hot – I recommend sunrise.

A Few Practical Tips Before Your Session
You don’t need to come overprepared. But a little thought ahead of time goes a long way.
One classic, simple look… and one optional outfit that reflects a little more of your personality (like a subtle print). That’s really all you need. If you opt for a second outfit make sure we plan at the beginning so we have time for both.
Keep hair and makeup natural. You want to look like yourself, just a slightly polished version. Timeless always wins here.
Think about the story you want to tell. This is a documentation of a really specific moment in your life. Think about how you want to remember it.
Trust the process. You don’t need to know how to pose. I’ll guide you through everything so it feels comfortable, natural, and true to who you are.

Why This Season Is Worth Documenting Well
Years from now, these photos are going to be more than just “the ones taken before I left.”
They’ll be the images that remind you of exactly who you were in this moment… the mix of nerves and excitement, the quiet faith, the readiness. That’s worth capturing with real intention.
I believe photos should be lived with, not just stored on a hard drive. Missionary photos especially. These are the ones that end up framed, shared, treasured… by you and by the people who love you.
Many families trust Gilmore Studios to create meaningful, guided sessions like this that feel relaxed and intentional from start to finish.
