Associate Photographer: Cody Gilmore

Senior year goes by fast. One minute your girls are walking into high school nervous about finding classes, and the next minute they’re planning graduation parties, talking about college, and counting down the days until everything changes.

That’s one reason best friend senior sessions have become so popular in Queen Creek and Gilbert, Arizona. These sessions are not just about graduation announcements. They’re about documenting friendships that shaped some of the most important years of their lives.

If you’ve been searching for a Queen Creek High School Senior Girls Photographer, and wondering if your daughter should include her best friend in part of the session, the answer is almost always yes.

What a Senior Graduation Session with Your Best Friend Actually Looks Like

Are you wondering if a best friend senior session will feel awkward or overly posed?

The truth is, these sessions usually end up being some of the most natural and emotional senior portraits we photograph.

The girls already know how to make each other laugh. They already have inside jokes. They already know how to bring out real smiles. That means the session feels less stressful and more like hanging out together while documenting this huge season of life.

Some of the moments parents end up loving the most are:

  1. Walking through the fields laughing together
  2. Hugging photos that feel completely genuine
  3. Fun cap and gown images before graduation
  4. Photos showing their personalities and friendship
  5. Casual movement shots that don’t feel stiff or forced
  6. Images that celebrate both graduation and friendship

A best friend senior session creates photos that feel emotional now and even more meaningful years later.

Why Queen Creek Is One of the Best Locations for Senior Portraits

One of the reasons so many families book senior photos in Queen Creek is because of the variety of scenery close by.

Within a short drive, you can photograph:

  1. Open desert trails
  2. Mountain views
  3. Golden wheat style fields
  4. Washes with natural greenery
  5. Soft sunset backdrops
  6. Rural roads and open spaces

The warm Arizona light during golden hour photographs beautifully for senior sessions, especially for girls wanting soft, timeless portraits.

“What Should We Wear for Senior Photos?”

This is one of the biggest questions parents and seniors search before booking.

The good news is that senior sessions do not need complicated outfits to look amazing.

For best friend graduation sessions, coordinating is more important than matching.

For sessions like this, soft neutrals, denim, whites, creams, and simple textures photograph beautifully in Arizona fields and desert locations.

A few tips that help:

  1. Avoid neon colors and busy logos
  2. Choose outfits that feel comfortable and natural
  3. Stick with colors that complement each other
  4. Bring one casual outfit and one dressier option
  5. Include cap and gown photos at the beginning or end

The goal is timeless photos that still feel like them years from now.

Should You Bring Cap and Gowns to Senior Pictures?

Absolutely.

Many seniors think they only need casual photos, but cap and gown portraits become some of the most meaningful images after graduation is over.

Those photos are often used for:

  1. Graduation announcements
  2. Party displays
  3. Family albums
  4. Social media posts
  5. Dorm room prints
  6. Gifts for grandparents

Adding the graduation gown helps tell the full story of this season.

The Friendship Photos End Up Meaning More Than You Think

One thing parents often do not realize is how quickly life changes after graduation.

Friends move away. Colleges separate people. Jobs, missions, and new schedules happen fast.

That’s why these friendship portraits become such an important time capsule.

The photos are not just about looking pretty. They document:

  1. Their personalities
  2. Their connection
  3. Their excitement for the future
  4. Their final season before life changes

Years later, these are often the images families treasure the most.

“My Daughter Feels Awkward in Photos…”

This is another huge search parents make before booking senior portraits.

Most seniors say this before their session.

The key is choosing a photographer who guides naturally instead of forcing stiff poses.

At Gilmore Studios Senior Sessions, we focus on movement, interaction, natural prompts, and helping seniors feel relaxed quickly.

That’s why friendship sessions work so well. Having a best friend there instantly lowers nerves and helps personalities come out naturally.

Where Should You Go After Your Senior Session in Queen Creek?

  2. Joe’s Real BBQ
  3. Postino East

Did you know many Arizona senior photographers book prime senior dates months ahead?

The best times for senior photos in Queen Creek and Gilbert are usually:

  1. Spring before graduation
  2. Fall for yearbook deadlines
  3. Golden hour evenings during cooler months
  4. Weekdays for less crowded locations

Booking early gives more flexibility for weather, outfits, and ideal lighting.

One of my love languages really is documenting life. 🤍

Maybe that’s why I love cake smash sessions so much.

Because babies don’t stay babies for very long.

One day they’re learning to sit up.
The next they’re smashing cake and celebrating their first birthday.
And before you know it, they’re heading off to kindergarten.

That’s why I take so many photos.

Not because every moment is perfect.

But because every stage is fleeting.

The cake will be gone.
The decorations will come down.
The outfits won’t fit anymore.

But the photos will still be there.

A reminder of who they were, what they looked like, and how much joy they brought into this season of your life. 🤍

Parents, what’s one thing your little one does right now that you never want to forget?
Pick something you love and make that your career. Honestly, that’s kind of what happened.

I never imagined that setting up backdrops, planning themes, making silly noises to get a baby to smile, and celebrating first birthdays would become my job.

But here we are. 🥹

And after all these years, I still get excited watching a theme come together and seeing a little one’s personality shine once they step into the studio.

Because cake smash sessions aren’t really about the cake.

They’re about celebrating a milestone that only happens once.

And getting to be a small part of that never gets old. 🎂

What’s something you could talk about or do all day and never get tired of?
Pelican Hill Resort + a gorgeous sunset + incredible food = an evening I didn’t want to end. 🧡 Had the best time covering this event for ABOG (Dallas, TX). The boho vibes were unmatched and decor was beyond. This is what happens when a great group of people gathers in a beautiful place.
This is just me being sarcastic - but some might be a little true. 😂

The question that starts almost every cake smash conversation:

What themes can we do?
Honestly — almost anything.

But here is what I actually recommend.

Choose something they are into right now. Whatever phase they are in at this exact age. The dinosaurs. The rubber ducks. The princesses. The trucks. The thing they carry everywhere and sleep with and talk about constantly.

Because here is what nobody tells you about cake smash sessions: in ten years that photo is going to show you exactly who your child was at this age. Not just what they looked like. Who they were.
That is worth capturing.

We have a full theme library on our website — but if you do not see something that fits your child we will build it custom. No two sessions have to look the same because no two kids are the same.
For this session we planned everything together from the start. Rubber ducky theme. Portraits first. Then family photos. Then cake.
And before we ever talked about the set — we talked about what she wanted to do with the photos.
She chose an album.

Because digitals are beautiful. But an album is something her daughter will open when she is grown and understand immediately.
What theme are you thinking for your little one? Drop it in the comments — I want to see what phase you are in right now.
