Senior and LDS Missionary Photo Session – Newport Harbor High School

There’s something really special about photographing a young man as he marks two big life moments—graduating from high school and preparing to serve a two-year mission. Recently, I had the chance to photograph a Senior and LDS Missionary Photo Session that combined both of these milestones at his alma mater, Newport Harbor High School. We focused on honoring his high school achievements while also celebrating his commitment to serve as an LDS missionary.

This Senior and LDS Missionary Photo Session – Newport Harbor High School (NHHS) was filled with pride, excitement, and a sense of purpose as we documented his transition from high school graduate to a young man ready for his mission. To make the session even more meaningful, we included his alma mater’s campus as well as the flag of the country where he will be serving. The combination of senior portraits and missionary photos made for a unique and heartfelt session that truly captured his journey.

Tips for a Successful Senior and LDS Missionary Photo Session

1. Start with Alma Mater Pride

Photographing at his high school alma mater is a great way to mark this huge chapter. Whether it’s in front of the school sign, by the football field, or near iconic campus landmarks, these images are more than just photos—they’re a nod to years filled with friends, achievements, and growth.

  • Use School Colors: Incorporate the school colors in his outfit or props, like a letterman jacket, school pennant, or graduation cap.
  • Highlight Personal Achievements: If he participated in sports, clubs, or any activities, take photos in those specific spots around campus.
  • Include Candid Moments: Capture him walking through the hallways or sitting on the bleachers, just soaking in the memories of his school years.
  • 2. Transition to Missionary Photos
  • After honoring his high school years, we switched gears to focus on his LDS missionary photos. The goal here was to balance the pride of his calling with the excitement of this new adventure.
  • Incorporate the Mission Flag: Whether he’s holding the flag, wrapping it around his shoulders, or displaying it proudly, this personal touch highlights his new chapter.
  • Showcase His Missionary Attire: Traditional missionary attire—like a white shirt, tie, and name tag—adds a sense of readiness and commitment to the photos.
  • Capture Sentimental Shots: Have him hold a set of scriptures, write a message in a journal, or stand confidently with the flag as a backdrop. These images reflect his dedication and excitement for the journey ahead.

2. Transition to Missionary Photos

After honoring his high school years, we switched gears to focus on his LDS missionary photos.

3. Combine Both Worlds

One of the most meaningful parts of this session was blending the two milestones into one story. We made sure to get shots where he’s wearing his graduation outfit while holding the mission flag. A perfect way to honor both where he’s been and where he’s headed.

  • From School to Service: Photograph him in his high school attire, holding his mission call, to symbolize the transition.
  • Reflective Moments: Have him sit on campus steps, looking at his mission paperwork, representing both reflection and anticipation.
  • Personal Touches: Encourage him to share something meaningful—like a favorite scripture or a reflection on his school years—and capture that genuine, heartfelt moment.

Why Combine Senior and Missionary Photos?

These two milestones often happen back-to-back, especially for young men graduating and then heading out on their mission. Combining the sessions creates a visual story that highlights his growth, his faith, and his readiness for what’s next.

As parents, it’s a great way to celebrate both pride in his achievements and support for his new journey. These photos will be cherished keepsakes that show how far he’s come and where he’s headed. As a Newport Harbor High School Photographer, capturing this dual milestone made for a truly memorable session.

The secret to an stress-free session?
Choosing the right location.

This family had a party right after, so we kept everything simple and close. No extra driving, no rushing… just time together.

And it made all the difference.

If you’re planning family photos, I’ll help you choose a location that actually works for your day.

Send me a message and let’s plan it.
Three things every parent should know before sending their child on a mission.

First… this season is full of lasts.
But it’s also the beginning of a whole new life of firsts for them.

Second… saying goodbye at the airport is hard.
You prepare for it, you know it’s the right thing… but you still miss them more than you expect.
And suddenly, everything reminds you of them.

And third… P-days become the day you look forward to the most.
That one day a week when you get to hear their voice, read their messages, and feel connected again.

• Save this if you’re in this season 🤍

• Send this to a parent preparing for a mission

It’s a big transition… for them and for you. #missionarymom #missionary #ldsmission
Turn your body slightly instead of facing the camera straight on.

Shift your weight to one leg, relax your shoulders, and bring your heads a little closer together.

Small adjustments like this make your photos feel more natural immediately.

Comment POSE if you want more simple tips.
In my experience, shooting during the first few weeks is ideal. During these early days, babies tend to sleep more and curl up in those naturally cozy positions we all adore in newborn portraits. Make sure to reach out and get on the calendar before the baby is born. We want to have some wiggle room with timing once the little one arrives.
The open environment at Back Bay invites your kids to explore, walk, and twirl safely. I’m there to guide you into natural poses, creating moments that are genuine rather than staged. The golden hour (right before sunset) is the best time for a session at this location.
