Tips for Parents Who Want More Lifestyle Candid Newborn Photos

Real Life Isn’t Stage-Managed… And Neither Are Your Best Photos

You’ve fed the baby, packed the diaper bag, and somehow got out the door in clothes that are (mostly) clean. You’ve made it to your newborn session…and now the pressure sets in. Should you smile? Where should your hands go? Is the baby doing the right thing?

Let me gently pause you right there.

Some of my favorite moments happen the second we stop trying so hard. A mom scooping up her crying newborn, instinctively rocking her with that gently swaying motion only she knows. It wasn’t posed, it wasn’t planned… and it was perfect.

That’s the heart of what I want to share with you today: The most meaningful newborn photos are never about performance. They come from connection. And connection? You’ve already got it.

Let’s Talk About What Really Matters

Here’s the thing… I know how much goes into even getting to a photo session in those early newborn days. You’re tired, your body is still healing, and you’re staring down a camera wondering, “What do I even do with my face right now?”

You are not alone.

In fact, most new parents come in with the same mix of love, nervousness, and sleep-deprived energy. And it’s not your job to make the session look like something out of a magazine. It’s my job to meet you where you are… and help you see the real beauty that’s already there.

At Gilmore Studios, it doesn’t have to be perfection. I photograph presence. That gut-deep, can’t-help-but-hold-them-a-little-closer kind of love… that’s everything.

If you’re planning to make your newborn session a little outing afterward (even just for a warm meal and a deep breath), families love visiting spots like Haute Cakes Caffé and Zinc Café & Market in Orange County for something cozy and comforting. For Arizona families, relaxed favorites like Snooze, an A.M. Eatery and The Porch are perfect places to slow down and enjoy the moment after your session.

So if you’re craving photos that feel like real life – the good, beautiful, sometimes snuggly chaos of it all – here are a few things I always share with my newborn clients.

How to Embrace More Natural, Meaningful Newborn Photos

1. You Don’t Need to “Make It Authentic” It Already Is

So many parents ask me, “How do I make this session feel more natural?”

The answer is simple: let it be.

I’ll guide you, absolutely. I’ll help with soft poses and angles that photograph well. But the magic? That comes when you follow your instincts.

Hold your baby the way you do at home.
Kiss their head when it feels right.
Close your eyes and breathe them in.

Those little gestures you think no one notices… those are the ones I’m always watching for. They tell the real story.

2. Let Go of “Perfect” and Just Be Together

Trying to fit your baby into a Pinterest moment will only make you more anxious. (And probably make your baby squirmy too!)

Some of the most heartfelt images come from the in-between moments:

Siblings meeting the baby while clutching their favorite toy.
A sleepy-feed cuddle that turns into a quiet nap.
That glance between parents – tired but totally in awe – that says, “Can you believe we made this tiny human?”

My advice? Let the unpredictability happen. I’ll take care of the rest.

3. Focus on Feel, Not Just Look

Photos that make you feel something… those are the ones you’ll hold onto forever.

So when you’re in front of the lens:

Think less about the camera and more about the baby in your arms.
Rock, sway, whisper. Let your hands rest naturally.
Instead of stiff smiles, try thinking about a moment that made you laugh during the first week home. It translates beautifully on camera.

Your job? Just be with your baby. Emotional connection always trumps the “perfect” pose.

4. Trust That It’s Okay to Pause

Sometimes babies cry. Sometimes they need to feed or be changed mid-session. That’s not an interruption, it’s part of the story.

One session that always stays with me… we’d just settled the baby into a soft wrap, perfectly lit, everything quiet. Then came the “I need mom NOW” wail. Mom just instinctively held her close, skin to skin. I didn’t stop the camera. I leaned in.

That single image? Layers of emotion. Security. Love. Presence.

These aren’t hiccups in the process… they are the process.

What to Wear for Lifestyle Newborn Sessions

When it comes to what to wear for sessions, I always recommend soft, neutral, comfortable pieces that don’t distract from connection. For babies and siblings, brands like Rylee + Cru and Quincy Mae are favorites for cozy textures and timeless tones. For moms, shops such as VICI Collection and ShopBirdie offer flattering, easessionsy-to-move-in styles that photograph beautifully without feeling overdone.
