The Big One – Surf Themed Cake Smash

Gilmore Studios in Newport Beach knows how to celebrate 1st birthdays like no other studio!  Recently, we had the pleasure of photographing a boy’s first birthday cake smash. A beach-themed twist brought the sun, sand, and surf right into our studio! Themed around “The Big One,” this session was all about fun, waves, and a splash of nostalgia with a nod to the iconic 1960s VW Microbus.

Setting the Scene: A Beachy Vibe

The theme for this first birthday cake smash was all about the beach—a perfect fit for our Newport Beach studio. The backdrop featured soft sand tones, with playful elements like surfboards, starfish, and a matching cake stand. But the showstopper was undoubtedly the miniature 1960s VW Microbus backdrop, painted in classic retro colors, which added a cool, vintage touch to the whole setup. This iconic symbol of surf culture tied the theme together, making it not just a photo session, but an experience.

The Cake Smash Experience

At Gilmore Studios, we believe the cake smash should be as fun for the kids as it is for the parents watching. For this session, the birthday boy was excited as he was introduced to his cake. Decorated in ocean blues with waves of frosting, the cake was the perfect complement to the beachy theme. As he explored the cake, smashing and tasting with pure delight, our cameras captured every laugh, smile, and frosting-covered face.

Capturing “The Big One”

The phrase “The Big One” took on a double meaning during this session. It not only referred to the big first birthday but also to the excitement of catching that perfect moment—just like a surfer catching a big wave. Our goal at Gilmore Studios is always to capture those candid, joyful moments that tell the story of your child’s special day.

From the sand between his toes to the frosting on his fingers, every detail was photographed to create a lasting memory that will be cherished for years to come.

The little things clients do that mean everything to me 🤍

“I tagged you.”
“I shared your page with my friend.”
“We’ll definitely be back.”
“My mom loved the photos.” 🥹

Honestly… those things matter more than people realize.

Because small businesses grow from people talking, sharing, recommending, and coming back year after year.

And after over 24 years in business, one of my favorite things is still watching clients turn into lifelong relationships.

That part never gets old. ✨

If you’ve ever supported a small business in any way, just know… it probably meant more than you realized 🤍
Dream job? Honestly, yes. But it’s so much more than a job.

For 24 years I’ve been trusted with the moments people will hold onto forever.
First cries. First birthdays. First lost teeth. Graduating high school and college. Vows. And then repeating the cycle all over again.

I’ve been there for the joy and the grief, the beginnings and the goodbyes. And somehow, after all of it, I still get to wake up and do it again tomorrow and it still takes my breath away every single time.

I’ve watched entire lifetimes unfold through my lens, and I don’t take a single frame for granted.

To my clients … you haven’t just given me a career. You’ve let me into the moments that matter most.

That’s everything. 🤍
What actually happens during prom photos 👀
Here’s how to instantly make your prom photos look better:
• Don’t stand stiff
• Keep movement in the poses
• Relax your hands and shoulders
• Stay close together in couple photos
• Laugh, talk, and i
That’s what I’m guiding the entire session.
Because the best prom photos don’t always happen from perfect posing...
They happen when everyone finally relaxes and starts having fun. #
Save this and send it to your date so everyone is on the same page
If younger me could see the amount of emails, sessions, editing, timelines, client calls, blogs, courses, and random to-do lists now… she’d be SHOCKED. 😅

I started Gilmore Studios in 2002 with no roadmap. Just a camera, a love for photography, and honestly… a huge love for the business side of it too.

Since then, I’ve photographed so many stages of life:
weddings, newborns, seniors, cake smashes, families, commercial shoots, events… and somehow many of those clients became lifelong friends along the way. 🤍

What started as “I think I want to do photography” turned into over two decades of documenting people’s biggest moments and helping other photographers grow businesses of their own.

And honestly?
I still love it just as much.
