There’s Something Special About Four
Four is such a good age for photos.
Kids at this stage have a real personality. They have opinions about their outfits. They twirl on command. They make their little siblings laugh and then immediately try to be the responsible one about it.
It’s genuinely one of my favorite ages to photograph and a birthday session brings all of that energy out in the best possible way.
Let me tell you about one session that still makes me smile when I think about it.
Sessions like these are photographed at Gilmore Studios, where the goal is always to create natural, personality-filled portraits that feel authentic to each child and family.
The Session That Reminded Me Why I Love This Work
A little girl came in to celebrate turning 4. She was wearing the most beautiful light blue sparkly dress with a big white bow in her hair, and she walked in like she already knew she was the star of the show.
We started with just her. At four years old, kids are old enough to actually play in front of the camera… to twirl, to grin, to show you exactly who they are. She did all of it.
Then her younger sister joined. They wore coordinating dresses, and from that point on, the session basically ran itself. They laughed. They hugged. The older sister kept trying to help her little sister “do it right,” which created the most genuine, personality-filled moments I could have asked for.
We wrapped up with family portraits, and as always, those ended up being some of the most meaningful images from the whole session.
That’s the thing about birthday sessions done well they’re not just about the birthday kid. They become a snapshot of your whole family right now, in this season.

How to Make a Four-Year-Old Birthday Session Feel Natural and Fun
If you’re thinking about booking a birthday session for your child, here’s how I approach it and what I’d suggest you keep in mind as you plan.
Start with individual portraits
Before adding siblings or family members, I always begin with just the birthday child.
This gives them time to settle in, get comfortable with me, and feel confident. By the time everyone else joins, they’re already relaxed and having fun.
Choose outfits that feel special but are still comfortable
Birthday sessions are the perfect excuse for something a little extra, a dress with tulle, a bow, something sparkly.
That said, comfort matters. If your child is pulling at their outfit or feels stiff in it, that shows up in photos. The goal is something that feels like them but a little more elevated.
Soft colors, light fabrics, and textures like tulle or lace tend to photograph beautifully.

Coordinate siblings rather than match them exactly
If you’re including a sibling, coordinating colors rather than identical outfits gives the photos a cohesive look while still letting each child’s personality come through.
The two sisters in this session both wore light blue, but their individual styles were completely their own and that came through in every single image.
Let your child lead
Four year olds are expressive. They want to move, show off, and make people laugh.
I follow their lead rather than over directing. Some of the best shots happen when I stop telling them what to do and just let them be.
End with family portraits
I always recommend saving time at the end for family photos.
Parents are usually focused on getting great shots of their kids, which makes complete sense. But those images of everyone together, the connection, the in-between moments are often the ones that end up on the wall.
Why This Kind of Session Matters
Here’s what I want you to take away from this..
A four year old is only four once. The way she twirls in that dress, the way she bosses her little sister around with total love, the way she looks at you when she thinks you’re not watching, that’s all happening right now, in this season.
A birthday portrait session isn’t just a cute thing to do. It’s a way to hold onto this version of your child before she grows into the next one.
And when you include siblings and family portraits, you’re creating something even bigger, a record of your family exactly as it is today.
