When One Dives In and the Other Just… Watches
I recently photographed twin girls for their first birthday, and honestly, it was one of those sessions I keep thinking about.
Both girls were dressed in soft blush pink outfits, sitting in front of their cakes on a dreamy studio set. Within seconds, one of them had both hands in the frosting. Fully committed. No hesitation.
The other one? She just sat there, looking around, quietly taking it all in.
That right there is twin cake smash photography in a nutshell.
They’re the same age, often dressed alike, sitting in the same setup… and they will do completely different things. And that contrast? It makes for some of the most genuine, memorable images of the whole session.
If you’re planning a twin cake smash and wondering what to expect, or how to even start planning it, let’s get into it.
Many of these sessions are photographed through Gilmore Studios, where every detail, from set design to timing, is thoughtfully planned so parents can feel relaxed and confident going into the session.

The Thing Most Parents Don’t Anticipate
Planning a cake smash for one baby already comes with a lot of moving parts. For twins, the stakes feel doubled, and honestly, sometimes they are.
The timing has to be right. Both babies need to be rested and fed. The setup needs to work for two. And you’re hoping they both cooperate at the same time.
Here’s what I always tell twin parents: the goal isn’t perfection, it’s connection. The interaction between your babies, the little looks they give each other, the way one reacts to the other’s mess – that’s the story you’re preserving.
My approach is always to create a session that feels calm and manageable, even with two babies. That starts long before the day of.

If you’re planning to turn your session into a full celebration day, many families love grabbing a meal after their session. A few great options in the Phoenix and East Valley area include:
Liberty Market – A bright, family-friendly spot with great breakfast and lunch options, perfect after a morning session.

Joe’s Farm Grill – A casual, fun outdoor dining experience that works especially well with kids.

How to Plan a Twin Cake Smash Session
Book Earlier Than You Think
For twin sessions, I recommend booking around 6 to 7 months in advance.
Custom-designed sets, coordinated themes, and the extra planning that goes into twin sessions take more lead time. Waiting until a few weeks out limits your options and adds unnecessary stress.
Schedule the Session at 10 to 11 Months Old
This is the sweet spot for a few reasons:
Babies are sitting confidently on their own
They’re curious and interactive, but not yet fully on the move
You’ll receive your images before their actual first birthday
The session stays manageable rather than turning into a two-baby chase
Once they’re walking, the whole dynamic shifts. The session works best when they’re still happy to sit and explore rather than wander off in opposite directions.
Choose a Morning Time Slot
For twins especially, timing the session around their natural rhythms is everything.
A well-rested baby is a happy baby. Two tired babies can change the entire experience. Morning sessions, after a good nap and a full feeding, tend to give you the best window of happy, alert, cooperative energy.

Keep Outfits Simple and Coordinated
Soft, coordinating tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus where it belongs – on your babies.
The blush pinks from that twin session worked perfectly. Nothing too busy, nothing that competed with the setup. Simple always wins.
If you’re looking for outfits for your twins or coordinating pieces for the whole family, these stores are great places to start:
ZARA Kids – Beautiful, modern styles with soft tones that photograph really well.

H&M Kids – Affordable, simple pieces that work perfectly for cake smash sessions.

Nordstrom – A great option for elevated, timeless baby outfits and accessories.

Bring a Backup Snack
Not every baby goes straight for the cake. If they’re unsure about it at first, having something familiar nearby, like puffs or crackers, can help warm them up before the cake comes out.
Don’t Skip the Bath Portion
The bath at the end of a cake smash session is not just cleanup. It’s its own set of images.
Two frosting-covered babies, splashing and laughing together in the tub, settling into that calm after the cake chaos… those images often end up being the ones parents love just as much as the smash itself. That twin session was no different. The bath is where some of the biggest smiles happened.

Why the Contrast Is the Point
Going back to those twin girls for a second.
The cautious one eventually reached over, grabbed a piece of frosting, and then didn’t stop. Her sister was already covered head to toe by that point.
That arc, watching one slowly come around while the other went all in, is the kind of thing you can’t plan or pose. It just happens when the session is set up well and the timing is right.
That entire flow worked because both babies came in rested, fed, and happy. The setup supported them. The session had room to breathe.
That’s what good planning actually buys you: the space for real moments to happen.
