Smash Cake Session – Winter Onederland

Seems like it was only yesterday when we first met baby Halle! Her mommy knew exactly what she wanted, and even brought some props with her to the smash cake session. We loved helping to create the “Winter Onederland” concept! Thanks again to our favorite local bakery for designing a beautiful cake.

This was one of a few sessions we photographed for this family in a one week span! It’s always so much fun to see them.

Finding your Smash Cake Session Theme

When we first started photographing cake smash sessions, Pinterest wasn’t really a thing yet! The sessions were quite simple back in those days. We bought a roll of colored paper, and the parents brought a home made cake. Here’s one from 2011…

As time went on, these sessions got more and more interesting! The next thing we knew, we were designing “one of a kind” sets and never looked back. Smash cake sessions are now a daily occurrence at the studio, and we love every single one of them!

In my experience, shooting during the first few weeks is ideal. During these early days, babies tend to sleep more and curl up in those naturally cozy positions we all adore in newborn portraits. Make sure to reach out and get on the calendar before the baby is born. We want to have some wiggle room with timing once the little one arrives.

The open environment at Back Bay invites your kids to explore, walk, and twirl safely. I’m there to guide you into natural poses, creating moments that are genuine rather than staged. The golden hour (right before sunset) is the best time for a session at this location.
